A Review of the Composer’s Organ Work
by Paul Hale
Another rarity is the Ian Venables piece. Venables (a pupil of Richard Arnell and John Joubert) writes a profound and lyrically comtemplative work which picks up Howells’ middle-period harmonic language and tweaks it somewhat during the long-breathed lines of its eight minute progress. A poetic and deeply-felt piece which fades away memorably al niente in Adrian Lucas’ sympathetic performance.
